Almost everyday there are men and women who come to the campus and hand out pamphlets for this organization or hand out bibles, I have even been given breakfast food this past week. Today there was a man handling out pamphlets about converting to a vegan diet! This guy made me laugh, I can eat a steak like it is nobody's business.
I personally did not get a pamphlet from this man as I try to ovoid those situations on my way to class, but as I got on the bus I overheard a conversation about this between two other girls. All over the pamphlet was pictures of farm animals, mainly the cute little baby piglets and chicken. One of the girls starts getting upset about the photos and that the piglets are raised for food, though her friend pointed out that she was going hunting this weekend.
I glanced at the photos and could see why she was upset by it, one photo captured a sow in mid-squeal (momma pig) in a farrowing crate. This presented farrowing crates to be this evil thing that harmed the sows. I pointed out to them that farrowing crates are not meant to hurt the sows, but instead to protect the piglets from the momma rolling over and laying on them. It allows the piglets to have room and still be close to the momma, keeping both the sow and piglets calm and happy.
This conversation lasted two minutes before I got off the bus. When talking to people about what is important to you, whether it is religion, politics, a social issue, etc; remember that it does not have to be a big production. It does not have to involve someone yelling or getting others upset. All it takes is just having a simple conversation.
